Picturesque Karamzin. Russian History in Paintings

The book, which combines two legendary names - historian Nikolai Mikhailovich Karamzin (1766-1826) and artist Boris Artemyevich Chirikov (1802-1866) - is one of the masterpieces of Russian book publishing in the 19th century.
Released in 1836 by the Saint Petersburg publisher Andrei Prevo, "Picturesque Karamzin" instantly became a bestseller - largely thanks to the engravings by Boris Chirikov, whose work was highly praised by the Imperial Academy of Arts. The text of the book, based on Karamzin's "History", was compiled by journalists V. M. Stroyew and B. M. Fyodorov.
The battle scenes created by Chirikov, the portraits of figures from Russian history, filled with drama and psychological depth, embody the spirit of the romantic and reverential attitude towards the history of the Fatherland, characteristic of Karamzin's text.
The new edition of "Picturesque Karamzin" presents classic engravings by Boris Chirikov in color for the first time, which will undoubtedly attract the attention of not only adult but also young readers to the book.
