Through cunning and trickery, Eugenides, the thief of Eddis, has become the new king of Attolia. He desired the queen, not the crown, but became entangled in the web of intrigue he himself created, and then drew an innocent young guard into the eye of the political storm. Poor Costis realizes that he has become a victim of the king's whims, but his contempt for Eugenides is gradually overshadowed by respect — the new king is in reality much more complex and profound than he seems at first glance.
