Landscapes

“Landscapes” is a collection of brilliant essays and reminiscences spanning more than half a century of the writing career of the English art critic and thinker John Berger. The book serves as a unique guide to a world not only of creations by masters of painting but also of the aesthetic and intellectual landscapes that have shaped the author's unique worldview. With each essay, we encounter not just an outstanding art critic but also an eloquent, original storyteller, a keen observer, an author of sharp aphorisms, and a bold critic who stands on Marxist positions. Calling on the reader to rethink clichéd notions about the role of creativity in human life, Berger speaks about art movements and individual artists from a broad historical perspective, while never losing sight of the socio-political context. He sincerely wishes for people to realize: “Art should serve as inspiration, not consolation.”
