Trip to Khiva. Travel notes

British officer and traveler Frederick Barnaby, who reached Khiva in 1875, is a real James Bond of the 19th century. Here are his travel notes, translated by Andrey Gelasimov. “The Great Game” and Russian life through the eyes of an Englishman. This is not based on a true story. These are real events. Frederick Gustav Barnaby (1842–1885) was a British Army intelligence officer and renowned adventurer and traveler. He has also been to Africa, Central Asia and Russia. He spoke several foreign languages, ran for parliament, and published several books. In his honor, an obelisk was erected on the grounds of St. Philip's Cathedral in Birmingham, on which are carved: "Burnaby", "Khiva 1875" and "Abu Klea 1885".
