Dao is simply the ultimate principle that connects all that exists into one. Existence is not chaos, without a doubt, it is cosmos. It possesses a remarkable orderliness, and this orderliness is called Dao. Dao simply means the harmony of... the whole. There is no temple of Dao, no statues, no prayers, no priests, no rituals - and that is wonderful! Therefore, I do not call it a doctrine or a religion. It is pure understanding. You can refer to it as Dharma, as the Buddha called Dao. In English, the word that best fits Dao is Nature with a capital N.
