The Oregon Trail, 1853. Naomi May had just turned twenty when she became a widow. This marked the beginning of true trials for the girl and her family. In search of a better life, the large May family sets out... on a dangerous journey West.

On the road, their guide, support, and protector becomes John Lowry. He lives between two worlds, a stranger among the Indians and a stranger among the whites. A feeling ignites between Naomi and John; they are drawn to each other, despite all the trials and the weight of the past.
