They Fought for Their Country

The work on the novel "They Fought for Their Country" was started by Mikhail Sholokhov in 1942 and continued, with interruptions, until 1969. Shortly before his death, the writer burned the manuscript, leaving only separate chapters of the novel. However,... even in incomplete form, the novel "They Fought for Their Country" makes an incredible impression on the reader, as Sholokhov astonishingly depicts the situation in the ranks of the Red Army in the early years of the war, the thoughts of simple soldiers who are deeply affected by the retreat, and how yesterday's peaceful citizens gradually turned into hardened fighters ready to defend their homeland at any cost.
