“We. The Diary of the Fall” is an attempt by Dmitry Glukhovsky to answer the question “What happened to Russia?”. Journalistic notes and social columns, each of which is merely a reaction to the news and trifles of life, come together to tell the story of Putin's regime from 2012 to the war in Ukraine. Already from today, moving step by step from event to event, Glukhovsky shows how freedom and democracy disappeared, how law enforcement agencies became brutal, how the ghosts of the USSR returned, how state ideology became militarized, and how the country prepared for war. Each text is commented on by the author in 2024, reflecting on himself and his own perception as a historical object. “We. The Diary of the Fall” shows with disheartening clarity how much we refused to see while Russia methodically and consistently moved towards militant tyranny.
