England, 1949. Clara Newton, the head of the Shilling Grange orphanage, cares for her new charges - Evelyn and the self-conscious Joyce. She tenderly loves all the orphans, although she feels lonely - especially now, when Ivor, the war hero who helped her with the children, has disappeared… Suddenly, Shilling Grange is put up for sale.
