The charisma of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte (1769—1821) has continued to attract historians, writers, theater directors, and filmmakers for over 200 years. The most famous Frenchman became not just a hero of his time but also the main character in literary works, vivid "golden" legends, and incredible "black" myths. Napoleon was both hated and exalted, but he was never forgotten. "What a novel - my life!" - these are the words of the Emperor himself. Napoleon possessed military and state genius, insatiable ambition, and the agility of an extraordinary diplomat. His personal charm, energy, and fantastic work ethic, enthusiasm, brilliant mind, and ability to achieve set goals, regardless of the number of casualties, as well as an extreme cynicism (with the phrase "From the great to the ridiculous is one step," the Emperor summarized the demise of his own army in the snows of Russia) made a strong impression on contemporaries and descendants alike. "There is no other immortality than the memory you leave in the minds of others," wrote Napoleon himself. His work, containing such contradictory qualities, is dedicated to the famous domestic historian Evgeny Viktorovich Tarle (1874—1955). The monograph on Napoleon was almost unanimously received by contemporaries as a masterpiece of historical prose. Combining the knowledge of a highly skilled professional historian with the talent of a writer, the author created a serious historical-biographical book that is both interesting and accessible to readers of any level of preparation.
