The Keeper of Enchanted Rooms

Rhode Island, 1846. Lonely writer Merritt Fernsby inherits a remote estate. Although no one has lived in it for over a century, the man is ready to call it his home, until he suddenly realizes that he has no choice.... Slamming and locking the doors behind him, Wimbrel House has no intention of letting Merritt go. Ever. Hylda Larkin from the Boston Institute of Keepers of Enchanted Rooms is trained to tame such buildings to preserve their historical and magical significance. She knows what dangers enchanted houses, prone to fits of rage, can harbor. Hylda assures Merritt that it is in his best interests to make Wimbrel House their ally. To achieve this, she will also have to move into the house. Despite her good training, a large arsenal of magical items, and a trained staff, the work proves to be incredibly difficult. As the investigation progresses, Hylda grows closer to Merritt, but the secrets of the house turn out to be deeper than they assumed. Moreover, sentient walls are not their only concern. Something outside is following the magic of Wimbrel House, and it may turn out to be much more dangerous than what lurks inside.
