World War I

World War I – one of the deadliest conflicts in history: about 9 million people died in battles and more than 5 million civilians – as a result of military occupation, bombings, famine, and diseases. Millions of people died as a result of the Armenian genocide in the Ottoman Empire and the influenza pandemic of 1918. It should be noted that, despite the vast number of studies, by the end of 2012 around 60,000 works on World War I had been published worldwide; the question of the preconditions and causes of this war remains one of the most debated. Historians continue to argue about the causes of the war, the degree of preparedness of the participating countries for it, and the responsibility for unleashing the conflict.
