My name is Peter Grant. I am a police constable, respected on the streets of London, and I am also an apprentice to a wizard. I work in the ninth department investigating economic crimes, known as "Madness," and from the perspective of the homicide department - as "Oh God, Not Them Again." But even their chief, a professional and hardened skeptic, Inspector Seville, has to call us in for strange night incidents. That's why at five a.m. I was standing at the subway station looking at the body of James Gallagher, a U.S. citizen and art faculty student. I wondered: how did he manage to reach his destination without being caught on the subway's CCTV, and why does the shard that stabbed the guy possess such strong magical power? But the worst was yet to come. James Gallagher turned out to be the son of an American senator, and a special agent from the FBI contacted me and started asking uncomfortable questions. For example, "What are you hiding?" or "How did you create this light out of nothing?". The deeper the investigation led me into the maze of canals, tunnels, and abandoned bomb shelters that lie beneath the streets, the more convinced I became that lower London is no less complex and densely populated than the upper. And perhaps it is much more dangerous.
