The novel by the famous writer Vasily Yan is dedicated to one of the most fearsome conquerors in the history of Rus – Batu. The Mongols, led by the grandson of Genghis Khan, swept like a fiery wave across Rus.... Ryazan, Chernigov, Kyiv, and many other cities were burned to the ground, the population annihilated, and the consequences of the western campaign were felt by Rus for several centuries. Behind these sparse words, there are terrifying images of war that shatter the fates of all who stand in its way. The sparse lines of history textbooks come to life, filled with the suffering and blood of the conquered, the delight and fury of the victors. The tragedy that occurred more than eight hundred years ago still touches the reader today.
