Margaret Mitchell describes the bygone generation of the American slave-owning South and its way of life, destroyed by the war, in which men perish, while calamities, one worse than the other, befall women. A new, cold world rises from the ruins of the past: the romance is gone, the sense of security is gone, crude material interests and concerns for a piece of bread have arrived.
