Great Mother. Female Images and Symbols

The Great Mother was first published in 1974, becoming the main work of Erich Neumann, the most famous student and collaborator of Carl Gustav Jung. Based on an extensive collection of images from various world cultures, he describes the symbolism of women in their diverse manifestations: the devouring and birthing goddesses of antiquity, the threatening and life-giving goddesses of fate, the goddess as the mistress of plants and animals, women's cults of mysteries, the face of feminine wisdom embodied in Sophia. The book laid the foundation for research in the fields of cultural studies, psychology, and psychoanalysis.
