Wilbur Smith (1933–2021) was born in Northern Rhodesia (South Africa) and received his education at Rhodes University, where he graduated with a degree in commerce. According to Smith, he started writing to forget about life's hardships, as fictional stories can be completely controlled, unlike one's own life. His first novel, "When the Lions Feast," was so successful that Smith contemplated a career as a professional writer. He is the author of 49 historical adventure and thriller novels. For his contributions to literature, Wilbur Smith was awarded the British National Book Award.
