Saikaku's artistic style is remarkable for its ambiguity. Before the reader's eyes, metamorphoses and miracles constantly occur: the author tirelessly changes masks, transforming from a moralist and chronicler into a cunning, inexhaustible storyteller full of inventions and jokes.
