The Nature of Man

David Hume is the greatest thinker of the Enlightenment, a representative of empiricist philosophy, standing at the origins of the Scottish school of common sense alongside John Locke and George Berkeley. His contemporaries spoke of him as a cheerful, erudite... man open to new ideas, who never sought revenge against his opponents, unlike other enlightened thinkers who took offense at the slightest critical remarks. Among his students was the economist Adam Smith, who relied on Hume's ideas in shaping his economic theory. This edition includes chapters from the work "A Treatise of Human Nature," where Hume reflects on the principles of thought and perception, as well as a number of essays explaining how to create a just and prosperous state through good private initiatives. All texts are accompanied by commentaries.
