Every grandfather-castle that has stood for over a hundred years holds some kind of secret. One sheltered a company of mischievous trolls, in another they kept an English king captive, and in the windows of the third, a pale woman...
in a white dress was seen at night…
These amazing medieval legends about castles and their surroundings have come down to us from folk storytellers. They are tales where Christian miracles coexist with mystical transformations, where brave knights and beautiful princesses live, and where there is pure and sincere love.
The author of the book is Ekaterina Vyacheslavovna Balobanova (1847–1927) — a Russian writer, librarian, and educator, an expert in the Celtic language and literature. This collection includes legends from Brittany and the Rhine, collected by her from local residents during her travels in Europe in the 1860s-1870s.
The book is accompanied by numerous illustrations, including early works by the artist E.E. Lansere, created for the 1899 edition.
