The Society of Consumption: Humanity in Search of Food

Food — one of the primary life necessities in any society. However, the modern person in most cases has an extremely vague idea of the path that familiar food takes before it reaches the table. In his book, journalist and... writer Mark Bittman analyzes how the pursuit of sustenance has led humanity to slavery, colonialism, hunger, genocide, and how we arrived at today’s situation, where the largest food industry companies ravage the planet and poison its inhabitants, deceitfully stuffing consumers with surrogate products created for outrageous profits. However, the author does not consider the situation hopeless: summarizing the positive experience of agroecological programs and peasant farming, he sees prospects in a world free from the dictates of global monopolies and calls upon ordinary people, activists, and governments of all countries to change the existing system.
