August Strindberg (1849–1912) is considered the founder of Swedish literature and theater: his pen is responsible for about a dozen novels and more than thirty plays, a multitude of short stories and novellas, he actively published as a journalist and...
wrote historical works about the history of his native country.
Failures in family life prompted Strindberg to write a cycle of stories titled «Marital Idyls». The stories are written in a light manner and contain characteristic, socially typical family tales.
Strindberg believed that marriage by definition cannot bring happiness to anyone. Why? There are reasons for this. Strindberg has at least thirty of them. One for each story in the cycle.
The collection of novellas «Marital Idyls» (1884–1886) is offered as a study text for those learning Swedish. The original authorial text is accompanied by comments and a glossary.
