Bruno Schulz is one of the most original Polish writers of the first half of the 20th century, working in the spirit of surrealism and, as he himself said, "magical realism." The collection of stories "Sanatorium Under the Klepsydra" is... a kind of autobiography of the author; it is a remarkable example of Schulz's creative style, blurring the line between real life and fictional life. This writer is distinguished by an extraordinarily rich poetic language that is unlike anyone else's and cannot be adequately translated into any other language. Schulz should be read only in Polish. His prose can be adored, it can be hated, but it will leave no one indifferent. In 1973, "Sanatorium Under the Klepsydra" was adapted by the outstanding Polish director Wojciech Jerzy Has. Bruno Schulz was shot by an SS officer in the summer of 1942 in the ghetto of the city of Drohobych.
