"Echoes" (Aftermath) is a tabletop game by Jerry Hawthorne, the author of "Fuzzy Tales" and "Comonauts", built on a similar principle: you will encounter a multi-page game book, where each spread is a unique location, allowing you to interact with... the game world, read the story, and make decisions that will determine how the plot unfolds.
You will transform into small creatures: hamsters, mice, guinea pigs - and fight for your own survival in a post-apocalyptic deserted city. The game differs from previous ones with a more adult tone, leaning closer to the survival simulator "This is My War" than to the fairy-tale "Mice and Mystics". And, of course, the game features a lot of narrative text, with the story, as always, firmly tied to all the mechanics.
The game has 27 missions, each with its own narrative. Additionally, each mission uses random events, ensuring the formation of a unique gaming situation.
Thanks to the combination of cards and dice, the gameplay is very flexible. Each turn, players draw up to five cards into their hand and can play as many of them as they wish. With the cards, you can move, defend, conduct close and ranged attacks. You can also pass cards to other players or save them for the future. By playing cards to perform an action, you add additional stats to them (for example, weapon bonuses) and roll a check die. The checks have varying difficulty levels. You can play large cards and then roll the die, hoping that the result will exceed the difficulty check value, but, of course, more often than not, you will have to choose whether to take risks here or there, play a bigger card to be sure, or a smaller one to save stronger cards for later.
To unlock some missions, you need to complete others, but the choice itself - in what order and how to explore the world - will also reflect your own play style. One mission takes about an hour, and you can always play several in a row. Strategic planning also involves how to develop your colony and which buildings to upgrade to succeed in future missions. Completing missions not only unlocks new missions, but also new upgrades, cards, and so on.
