The novel «We» by Russian writer Yevgeny Ivanovich Zamyatin (1884–1937) is one of the first dystopias in the world. It is not just a satire on what was happening in Russia in the 1920s; it is a model of the relationship between a totalitarian state and the individual, order and chaos, regulation and creativity, reason and emotion. A strict routine of life, the same clothing, «numbers» instead of names, the equalization of all people, their thoughts and feelings — this is life in a distant future. But can freedom of a thinking and feeling person be limited in such a way?
The collection also includes the novella «Provincial», in which the author reflects on the issues of provincial backwoods, the «English» novella «The Islanders», and selected stories.
