New constable Peter Grant Constable dreams of becoming a detective in the London police. After receiving testimony from a witness who turned out to be a ghost, Peter comes to the attention of senior inspector Thomas Nightingale, who is responsible for investigating crimes related to magic and other manifestations of the supernatural.

When a wave of brutal and bizarre murders sweeps the city, Peter is suddenly plunged into a world where gods dwell alongside mortals, and long-dead evil and dark magic return to life.
