«Uncle Tom's Cabin» is an outstanding novel by Harriet Beecher Stowe, directed against slavery in the US. Soaked with universal humanist ideals, the novel immediately after its publication caused a wide resonance, dividing society into those who praised and those...
who condemned «Uncle Tom's Cabin». The range of opinions was so vast that by the end of the 19th century a separate direction in American literature emerged called «anti-Tom literature», in which various prominent authors of their time sought to justify the benefits of slavery for the slaves themselves and «forever forget» Beecher Stowe's novel. Eventually, the situation in society escalated to the limit, and according to many historians and literary scholars, it was «Uncle Tom's Cabin» that served as the catalyst for the start of the Civil War in the US. The most important outcome of the Civil War was the Thirteenth Amendment to the US Constitution, which permanently prohibited slavery.
The story of the Negro Tom, his misadventures and wanderings, which also includes a thorough portrait of the morals of the era, remains a mandatory item in the educational program of anyone seeking to understand the prerequisites for the formation of the modern face of our civilization and its ethical component.
