If old Earnshaw had known what would befall his family by taking in the boy from the streets, he would have run away from his estate as far as his eyes could see. But he did not know - nor did others know. Catherine did not know either, who first loved Heathcliff as a friend and brother, and then with all the fervor of her youthful nature. But Heathcliff was not accepted in the family as an equal; he was offended and humiliated for a long time. And then he decided to take revenge.
