This book shocked and astonished contemporaries with the concentration of evil that emanates from its pages. Publishers did not publish it, fearing persecution from the church and the state. An obscure French poet, hiding under a pseudonym, challenged morality and hypocrisy, celebrating perhaps all the vices known to humanity.
