Russian Art

The name of Igor Emanuelovich Grabar 1871–1960 is inseparably linked to the art of the Soviet period. He became famous not only as a painter but also as an art historian, educator, and founder of the Russian restoration school. His multi-volume work History of Russian Art is one of the important cultural studies of the early 20th century. Acting as editor and author, Grabar created the first complete and thorough account of the history of domestic architecture and painting from ancient times to the 18th century. Among the authors of the essays are Ukrainian art historian G. G. Pavluitsky, art historian and translator P. P. Muratov, architect-restorers F. F. Gornostayev, A. V. Shchusev, V. A. Pokrovsky, and V. V. Suslov. This publication combines two volumes: the first — History of Architecture. Pre-Petrine Era about ancient cultural monuments belonging to the stone and wooden architecture of Moscow, Veliky Novgorod, Pskov, and other cities, and the sixth — History of Painting. Pre-Petrine Era about outstanding masters and icon painters of Russian medieval times.
