Shinji accidentally encounters a guy named Kaworu Nagisa and learns that he is the new pilot. Shinji takes him to NERV, and at the same time, the headquarters is attacked by another Angel. Asuka, wanting to take revenge for past defeats, rushes into battle but finds herself unable to withstand the Angel's mental attack, which stirs her deep emotional wounds.
