"City" is a tabletop game for 2-4 players by Shun and Ai Taguchi.
Since I played "Glen More," one of my favorite mechanics has been tile activation. I just really like it. The game takes place over four rounds. The design...
is just fine, it is more than suitable. The picture on the box is nice, and the buildings are a bit cartoonish. The game board is double-sided with three types of resources: stone, fish, and wood—pre-printed on the map. The box is beautiful and small, with an excellent organizer that has enough space for more tiles or expansions. The game is very simple. Each turn, players will either place a worker on a square on the map, activating the eight squares around him, or build a building. There are twelve buildings to choose from plus five cornfields. Each time you build a building, you earn victory points. At the end of the round, you need to feed your workers (at this moment everyone sighed). This has been seen in "Agricola" or "Tzolk'in," but here feeding is not burdensome: just one fish or corn per worker, and this is easily achievable, especially if you build a field. If you want, you can exchange three coins for a resource of your choice. There are several interesting buildings available. Fields produce wheat and cost one wood, also bringing in 3 VP. Other buildings give you VP or money for resources. The pawnshop allows you to exchange two resources for two others, while the statue gives you 10 VP. The bar and the well simply provide VP, while the bookstore and gold mine produce coins. There are also four special buildings: cathedral, residence, castle, and watchtower, which give you VP at the end of the round/game depending on the surrounding tiles— for workers activating buildings, built buildings, and empty squares. Players must carefully consider where to place their workers to gather the resources needed to build the necessary buildings for bonuses. As the game progresses, the area for placing tiles becomes increasingly crowded, making it harder to use buildings. And money is also tight. Finding combinations of buildings and pre-printed resources is where the game shines. The objective of the game is to score as many victory points as possible, and the score track is located at the bottom of the game board. Each player has an additional VP token if they score more than 60 points.
