Vladimir Ivanovich Dal 1801-1872 - one of the brightest representatives of Russian culture in the 19th century. Following in the footsteps of his Danish father, he received a medical education, worked as a doctor, served in the army; then came... years of service as a civil servant. However, Vladimir Ivanovich was most attracted to Russian literature. His created Explanatory Dictionary of the Living Great Russian Language and the collection Proverbs of the Russian People have not lost their significance, as they are documents that recorded the language, spirit, and wisdom of the Russian people and thereby immortalized them. Sometimes, while extolling the achievements of Dal, the scientist and collector of folklore, his literary heritage is undeservedly forgotten. In addition to numerous stories, novellas, and essays, in which Dal was one of the first to accurately and unvarnished depict the life of ordinary Russian people, Vladimir Ivanovich left a huge number of fairy tales to posterity, addressed not only to children of all ages but also to adults. A. S. Pushkin, who shared a close friendship with Dal, valued them extremely highly, and it was these tales that inspired the greatest Russian poet to create The Tale of the Fisherman and the Fish. Dal turned to the genre of fairy tales multiple times throughout his life, and he was attracted not only by Russian but also by Ukrainian, Bulgarian, and Eastern fairy tales. However, it was the Russian folk tales, as well as proverbs, songs, games, and riddles, that occupied a special place in this row. In introducing children to folk art, Dal saw a means of moral education, a guarantee of the strength of the connection of the younger generation with the soil, roots, and homeland, and a prerequisite for children to master the true, pure, living Russian language. This collection includes the most famous fairy tales of the writer.
