The collection, released in the "For Schoolchildren. Time-Tested" series by the "Omega" publishing house, features legendary works by the famous 19th-century English science fiction writer H.G. Wells. In the novel "The War of the Worlds," Victorian England is depicted, battling for survival against alien invaders amidst flames and human blood. Highly advanced beings from Mars decide to colonize Earth. People are shocked and broken. They cannot find the courage to fight the invaders and perish in horror. Only one weapon can save the planet, but it was not created by humans. The future that Wells envisions in the novel "The Time Machine" is far from admirable. On the contrary, what awaits humanity ahead is horrifying. Under the guise of a highly developed and high-tech society, the Time Traveler will witness the decline of human civilization. Interestingly, the author's assumption about the distant future does not evoke surprise, as the prerequisites for it are already observable today - moreover, even more clearly than in the times when the book was written.
