The name of writer and veterinarian James Herriot is known to millions of readers around the world; his works have been translated into dozens of languages. In this book, the author once again turns to the funny and infinitely touching stories about his four-legged patients — wise and wonderful — and recalls the early years of his veterinary practice in Darrowby, which has the features of Thirsk, where the James Herriot Museum is now located. The collection also includes stories about how, after a short family life, the young veterinarian found himself in the role of a newly minted pilot of the Royal Air Force of Great Britain and made his first solo flights. The book was first published in Russian in 1985 (as part of the collection “All Creatures Great and Small”), with omissions of certain fragments and entire chapters. This edition publishes the complete translation with restored omissions.
