The Meaning of History. The Russian Idea. Self-Knowledge. Philosophical Works

Nikolai Alexandrovich Berdyaev (1874–1948) — the greatest Russian philosopher of the first half of the 20th century, a representative of religious existentialism and personalism. His ideas influenced not only Russian but also world culture. This edition includes the most important works reflecting the evolution of the author's views: «The Meaning of History» (published 1923), «The Russian Idea» (1946), «Self-Knowledge» (1949), «The Kingdom of Spirit and the Kingdom of Caesar» (1951).
The entire creativity of N. A. Berdyaev, exiled from Russia on the “philosophical steamer”, is nevertheless closely connected with his homeland — its historical fate, ideological and religious foundations. This theme runs as a leitmotif in «The Russian Idea» or «The Meaning of History», is clearly expressed in «Self-Knowledge» — an amazing «experience of philosophical autobiography», and in Berdyaev's last work «The Kingdom of Spirit and the Kingdom of Caesar», published posthumously.
