King Alexander III of the ancient Argead dynasty, better known as Alexander the Great and Alexander of Macedon, is famous for his successful military campaigns that allowed the general, who lived only 33 years, to conquer lands stretching from the Black Sea straits to the Syr Darya and the Arabian Sea. Over the millennia, filled with wars, fires, and radical changes in culture, all early works of ancient historians recounting Alexander have been lost. However, a significant part of their material has been conveyed to us through writings created several centuries after the conqueror's death. This edition includes the ancient written monuments now available, in which information from early sources is transmitted relatively accurately. These are the works of Arrian, Diodorus, Plutarch, Strabo, and Athenaeus. By referring to the materials presented in these works, the reader has the opportunity to form their own understanding of both Alexander's activities and the peculiarities of his image's perception in later times.
