In 1995, Joe Sacco went to the Balkans to gather eyewitness accounts of the Bosnian War. He was one of the first journalists to find himself in the Muslim enclave of Goražde,... besieged by Bosnian Serbs, and conducted dozens of interviews with trapped residents who had no access to the outside world, electricity, or running water. Their tragic stories are the best evidence of what happens when politics are placed above human lives.
«Goražde: Safe Area» is Sacco's magnum opus, which allowed him to become one of America's most recognized journalists. In 2001, the book won the Will Eisner Award and was nominated for the Harvey Award. Additionally, Time magazine named «Goražde» the best comic of 2000, and the New York Times included it in its list of the best books of 2001.
