Grass

The graphic novel by Kim-Jandri Kymsuk is dedicated to the fate of a Korean woman, Lee Okson, who was sold by her parents into another family in childhood and ended up in sexual slavery at one of the «comfort stations»... for Japanese soldiers. Together with the little girl, we find ourselves on the brink of World War II and experience all the horrors of the Japanese occupation that it brought upon ordinary Koreans.
«Grass» is a powerful anti-war novel that uncompromisingly exposes the horrific cost of war and affirms the importance of peace. It was listed among the best comics of 2019 by The New York Times and The Guardian, awarded the Harvey and American Library Association prizes, as well as the Big Other Book Award, Cartoonist Studio Prize, and Krause Essay Prize.
