Requiem for a Dream was first published in 1978. The book tells the stories of four residents of New York who, unable to endure the difference between dreams of an ideal life and the real world, seek solace in illusory... ersatz-replacements. The main character of the novel, in the author's opinion, is Addiction, and the book itself is a manifesto of the triumph of Addiction over the human spirit. It is a requiem for all those who betrayed life for a rainbow illusion and lost the Human within themselves. The film adaptation of Requiem for a Dream was released in 2001. The film was nominated for Oscars and Golden Globes.
