A classic work by the English art historian Herbert Read (1893-1968), first published in English in 1959 and since regularly reissued around the world, surveys the main directions and trends in European and American painting of the late 19th to 20th century. Extended by the author to the 1950s, it was later supplemented with a chapter dedicated to the development of painting in the following decade and published in Russian for the first time.
