Eisenstein on Paper. Graphic Works of the Master of Cinema

The book "Eisenstein on Paper" is a significant milestone - it presents for the first time 500 of the best graphic works of the great master of cinema, stored in his personal collection at the RGALI. Some works are published... for the first time. In addition to drawings, the album reproduces frames from Eisenstein's films (scanned from film stock). The publication traces the extraordinary turns of Eisenstein's life and career through the styles of his graphics. Despite their diversity, they are links in a unified creative evolution: from early childhood drawings to costume and set sketches, from absurd psychoanalytic sketches to late abstractions.
The leading researcher of Eisenstein's life and work, the author and compiler of this monographic album, Naum Kleiman, reveals the motives and tasks of the director's graphic works in a new light, quoting and commenting on excerpts from the reflections and analyses of the master himself, part of which is also published for the first time.
The publication opens with a foreword by the legendary contemporary director Martin Scorsese.
The introductory article on the history of the archive of Sergei Eisenstein and the vast complex of his graphic heritage is prepared by the director of RGALI - Tatiana Goryaeva. The biographical article is written by British film historian Ian Christie.
