The history of Impressionism, which forever influenced all subsequent art, spans just 12 years: from the first exhibition in 1874, where the famous Impression was presented, to the final, eighth exhibition in 1886. Édouard Manet and Claude Monet, Edgar Degas... and Auguste Renoir, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Paul Gauguin – whose stories begin this book – were among the first to oppose the conventions of the classical painting that had formed by that time.
