A detective story where life is governed by chess combinations.

Modern Milan. A series of mysterious murders occurs at night. Near each body, a cunning criminal leaves a printout of a chess game. The police do not know what to think. They have to turn to Fossati — a former chess player, now a private detective. He is forced to join the game. For the investigation forces him to confront the darkest pages of his past, which he hoped to bury in some distant drawer.

This Italian detective, filled with references to classics, including Russian ones — from Dostoevsky to Nabokov, — reveals the abyss of the human soul and its most primal instincts, where nothing is what it seems. Distinguishing friend from foe becomes the most challenging task here.
