Notes on the Gallic War

At its core are the military campaigns of 58–50 BC. The author systematically describes the campaigns against the Gallic and Germanic tribes, the crossings of the Rhine, and two expeditions to Britain. In addition to battles and sieges, the book contains information about the geography of Gaul, Germany, and Britain, as well as ethnographic observations about the lifestyle, beliefs, and social structure of the local peoples. A separate place is given to questions of strategy, tactics, the organization of the Roman army, and the retention of conquered lands.
