At the center of the narrative is the story of a young Frenchman, his wife, and a European geisha: it is a delicate, multilayered exploration of love — touching, beautiful, at times painful. Baricco does not strive for a straightforward narrative: he builds the emotional fabric of the novel through nuances — poignant longing, sweet tenderness, elegant eroticism that does not cross into explicitness but remains a hint, intensifying the tension.
The plot leads the hero through distant journeys, transforming geographical movements into an internal journey: it is a story about the search for happiness, which seems to shimmer in the distance, alluring and unattainable, although in reality, it turns out to be quite close — one just needs to stop and see. The pursuit of a dream becomes the main conflict of the book, and its resolution is quiet, almost imperceptible, but no less piercing for that.
