I Confess

«I Confess» — a novel by the Catalan writer Jaume Cabré: a monumental work that has firmly entered the canon of contemporary European literature. The book has been awarded several prestigious Spanish prizes, translated into more than 20 languages, and its circulation is approaching one million copies. For a decade and a half, the novel has remained on the lists of key works that are essential reading.
At the center of the narrative is Adrià Ardevol, a musician, polyglot, and art connoisseur, who, sensing the loss of memories, relives his life anew. Through the prism of his memory, complex family relationships are revealed: the tender care of nanny Lola, the detachment of the pragmatic mother, the mysterious fate of the erudite father. An important role in the plot is played by the father's antique shop and his main treasure — an ancient violin made by the Cremonese master Storioni, associated with the shadow of a long-ago crime.
The narrative goes beyond the personal story of the hero: the threads of the plot stretch back through the centuries — to the Catalan monastery of Sant Pere del Burgal. The sounds of the violin acquire an almost magical power, changing the fates of people. Thus, private drama intertwines with the mysteries of history, and personal memory — with collective memory.
