Zabira - the daughter of the Minister of Justice of Kazakhstan, lives in a world of school concerts and carefree youth.

But her father's arrest in one night turns her into an exile.

Together with her husband, she flees to the Urals, where the family faces poverty, war, and hunger. But through suffering, new life sprouts: Zabira's daughter becomes an artist, and her granddaughter Zalina learns about her repressed great-grandfather and legendary ancestors - and returns to the native steppes of Kazakhstan, where it all began.

A saga of memory that cannot be broken by repression, and of roots that are stronger than any storm.
