German Fairy Tales

The legends and tales of Germany are not only the familiar stories of the Brothers Grimm, Wilhelm Hauff, and Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann. Our book will open up for children and adults a much wider and richer palette of the German fairy tale tradition.
Alongside classical works such as "The Nutcracker," "Little Claus and Big Claus," and "The Cold Heart," the book includes no less vivid but lesser-known works by famous German writers: magical stories by the romantic poet and "poet of the era" Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the outstanding folklorist Ludwig Bechstein, and the original children's writer Clara Maria Fechner. A special place in the collection is occupied by rare folk tales and one of the most mysterious legends of medieval Germany—the story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin as adapted by Prosper Mérimée.
The fairy tales are illustrated with the works of outstanding masters of European book graphics from the 19th–20th centuries and are presented in classic Russian translations from the late 19th to early 20th centuries, preserving the authentic spirit and atmosphere of that era.
