In the folklore of all nations around the world, there are mysterious tales of ghosts, ogres, witches, or reanimated corpses. In every corner of the globe, children listened with bated breath to such stories, which not only frightened but also taught them to distinguish good from evil, helped them conquer fear, and fostered courage. This collection features 33 captivating stories from 20 countries — from the gloomy Finland to the sun-soaked Africa.
In reading these tales, we find inspiration from both the old romantic writers — Hoffmann, Irving, Coleridge, Mary Shelley, and our contemporaries — J.R.R. Tolkien, Stephen King, Neil Gaiman, George R.R. Martin, and the creators of the series “Wednesday.” The translations of the tales were done by recognized masters of the Russian translation school of the 19th — early 20th centuries, and the illustrations were created by the classics of book graphics — Walter Crane, Arthur Rackham, Edmund Dulac, Frank Adams, Ivan Bilibin, and others.
